Microsoft sold 10 million units of its new Kinect in three months. The Kinect holds the Guinness World Records of the fastest-selling consumer product of all time. It's selling three times more in comparison to Apple's iPad which sold about 3.3 million. Microsoft spends lot of money in research by employing 850 Ph.D.s holders from software engineers to sociologists where Apple produced iPod by combination a 1.8-inch hard drive invented by Toshiba, a scroll wheel invented by Synaptics, software and interfaces largely designed by another small companies.
Kinect is a motion sensor device. The main part of this device is a sensor that can recognizes you and your loved ones/family. As you start moving, it understands your body movement. It sees you head to foot, and it tracks every joint in your body, so if you see a ball and you want to kick it, you can simply kick it. There is no interface to it by attaching some strings to your body. It also has a voice recognition, so that if say like “Xbox pause” or “Xbox play,” “Xbox Stop,” or any number of commands the devise started obeying your command in a more simple, natural and easy way.
The brain behind Kinect is a series of sophisticated algorithms that will range from machine learning to computer vision to signal processing design which helps identity recognition i.e. who you are into full body motion, being able to understand precisely the motion of your body and ultimately to be able to translate noise into voice recognition with help of four microphones that serve as ears for different sound sources and different mouths in the room. The sensor can recognize color in the infrared range. According to Microsoft the biggest challenge was to recognize people about 12 feet plus away from the television in semi dark rooms and also they are genetically very similar because you play game ,watch TV with your sibling, brothers, sisters. The people in a family looks and sounds very similar. Kinect competes with the Wii Remote Plus and PlayStation Move and PlayStation Eye motion control system
